Jacob Ramsey scores his first Newcastle goal to leave Thomas Frank on the brink

Jacob Ramsey struck the decisive blow as Newcastle United claimed a crucial 2-1 away victory over Tottenham Hotspur to deepen the hosts’ slump and pile further pressure on Thomas Frank.

Both sides entered the contest under scrutiny after poor recent runs, with Tottenham desperate for their first league win of 2026 and Newcastle seeking a response after three straight Premier League defeats.

The early signs pointed firmly in Newcastle’s favour, with Eddie Howe’s side sharper, more purposeful and far more comfortable in possession at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Joe Willock nearly gave the visitors an early lead when his low strike from the edge of the area drifted narrowly wide, setting the tone for a dominant first-half display.

Tottenham struggled to settle and the anxiety inside the ground was clear as misplaced passes and passive duels drew audible frustration from the home support.

Newcastle’s pressure eventually told in first-half stoppage time when Malick Thiaw capitalised on hesitant defending to open the scoring.

Guglielmo Vicario could only parry Thiaw’s header from Anthony Elanga’s cross and the defender reacted quickest to stab home the rebound ahead of Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray.

Tottenham emerged with greater intent after the interval and briefly looked capable of mounting a response.

That improvement was rewarded when Archie Gray levelled the scores, reacting sharply to hook home after Sarr headed a corner back across goal.

Any sense of momentum, however, proved short-lived as Newcastle immediately reasserted control.

Anthony Gordon drove into the area and picked out Ramsey, who calmly swept a first-time finish into the bottom corner to restore the visitors’ lead.

It was Ramsey’s first goal for the club following his summer move from Aston Villa and one that ultimately settled the contest.

Tottenham pushed forward in the closing stages but lacked clarity and quality in the final third, with Newcastle defending resolutely to see out the result.

The win was only Newcastle’s third away league success of the season and lifted them back into the top half of the table.

The defeat extended Tottenham’s winless league run to eight matches and left them hovering uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.

Sections of the home crowd made their feelings clear before full-time, with chants aimed at Frank underscoring the growing unrest.

While Newcastle celebrated a timely morale boost, Spurs were left confronting another damaging night that offered few signs of immediate improvement.
