Real Madrid line up Rodri move as Enzo Fernandez and Adam Wharton emerge as backup options
Real Madrid plan to bolster their midfield when the transfer window reopens in the summer.
Madrid once boasted one of the best midfields in European football with Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
The Los Blancos signed Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Arda Guler to replace their departures, but none have yet produced consistently.
Madrid are now ready to add more quality to their midfield. Mundo Deportivo reports that Manchester City star Rodri is their priority midfield target.
Rodri’s contract at City ends in 2027, and the Spaniard recently admitted that he was open to joining the record Champions League champions.
Madrid believe that Rodri can make an immediate impact, given his knowledge of Spanish football, having previously played for local rivals Atletico Madrid and Villarreal.
City appear to be preparing for Rodri’s exit. They have identified Elliot Anderson as a prime target, while Sandro Tonali is also on their radar.
Madrid will explore a move for either Enzo Fernandez or Adam Wharton if they fail to sign Rodri.
Fernandez’s future with Chelsea is uncertain following his comment after the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, suggesting he wants to leave the club.
The Argentina international recently expressed admiration for Madrid, further fuelling raising doubts about his future at Chelsea.
Wharton is considering leaving Crystal Palace as he wants to play in the Champions League.
The England international is one of Manchester United’s top midfield targets and is also on Liverpool’s radar.
A move for Wharton might not be straightforward for Madrid, given the competition for his signature.
