75% of fans are against the use of VAR in Premier League, per FSA survey

A survey by the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) has found that 75% of fans are against the use of video assistant referee (VAR) in the Premier League. 

Just under 8,000 supporters of the 20 top-flight teams responded to the survey, and it was found that an overwhelming majority oppose the system. 

90% disagreed that the introduction of VAR has improved matchday experience, while 91% believed technology has harmed the spontaneity of goal celebrations. 

Only 21% of the respondents agreed that VAR should be used to check if corners have been awarded correctly. This system is set to be trialled at the upcoming 2026 World Cup. 

The FSA told BBC Sport that most fans want VAR removed as they are annoyed about the delay in reaching decisions, its accuracy and the reduced spontaneity. 

But despite widespread dissatisfaction with the system, it is unlikely to be scrapped from the Premier League. 

For VAR to be removed, 14 of the 20 top-flight clubs must vote against it. 

This is unlikely as most of the teams appear to be in favour of keeping the current system. 

In 2024, 19 of the 20 Premier League clubs voted in favour of continuing the use of VAR, with only Wolverhampton Wanderers voting against it. 

A more likely scenario appears to be the introduction of more changes to improve how technology is used in the game.
