2026 Finalissima: Argentina reject Madrid as venue vs Spain, only three options remaining
With negotiations reaching a critical stage for the 2026 Finalissima venue, reports out of Europe initially suggested the Santiago Bernabeu as a frontrunner. The high-profile clash between Argentina and Spain, scheduled for March 27, was rumored to be moving from Qatar to Madrid. However, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has a different perspective.
According to Argentine insider Esteban Edul, neither the AFA nor CONMEBOL authorities have any intention of playing at Real Madrid’s home stadium. The South American governing body is reportedly unwilling to allow the match to take place on Spanish soil, as the Albiceleste would essentially be treated as the visiting team.
As a result, there are three possible scenarios for the high-profile fixture between Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal. The first—CONMEBOL agreeing to play in Spain—is currently considered the least likely outcome.
The second and most viable option involves securing a venue in a neutral European country, which is the AFA’s primary goal. In recent days, Lisbon, London, and Rome have emerged as strong candidates to host the Finalissima, as the major stadiums in those cities have no events scheduled for the March 27 date.
The final alternative is a postponement. However, both federations are reluctant to delay the match again, given the difficulty of finding a new window in an already congested calendar. The contest was originally slated for 2025 but was pushed back due to scheduling conflicts for both sides.

Rafael Louzan Abal, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), confirmed in a recent interview with El Larguero that the 2026 Finalissima will not take place in Qatar as originally planned.
A new host city is expected to be announced in the coming days, as officials scramble to secure a venue for the March 27 showdown between Argentina and Spain.
“It is very difficult. We already canceled two charter flights four days ago,” Louzan Abal explained. “The agreement with UEFA and CONMEBOL involves a promoter that contracted a six-match package. It’s all part of the same deal, and we will finalize the details very shortly”.
The federation president emphasized the importance of making a decision that satisfies all stakeholders while maintaining international relations. “I hope this is a reasonable decision that is well-received by the vast majority. These host nations deserve our respect—for instance, we have a contract with Saudi Arabia until 2029. There is a lot at stake,” he added.
