Conmebol statement reveals Argentina wanted to change date of 2026 Finalissima vs Spain
After several back-and-forths regarding the staging of the Finalissima, which had Spain and Argentina as the main protagonists, this high-profile event was canceled. One of the reasons it will not take place is the lack of dates and a venue. According to the latest statement from Conmebol, Argentina had agreed to play the match in Italy, but with a postponement to March 31, something that ultimately did not reach consensus.
The scheduled date was March 27, and everything indicated that it would be played at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. However, due to the lack of neutrality with Spain being the other finalist, this will not be viable.
In this way, and without being able to find a middle ground—not only geographically for hosting the match but also due to the tight schedule—it was unanimously decided to cancel the event until further notice.
