2026 Finalissima canceled: Will Argentina vs Spain be rescheduled?

After much back-and-forth, numerous meetings, and proposals, the Finalissima between the Argentina and Spain has been canceled. The question many are now asking is: will this important match be played at another date?

According to Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla, a rescheduling is in consideration, though there are no hypothetic dates or venues on the table yet.

The option of staging it before the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now ruled out, since March was the opportunity to do that.

2026 might be off the table for the Finalissima

However, Spain cannot play the Finalissima in the first international breaks after the World Cup either, as the reigning UEFA Euro champions have Nations League games both in September and October.

Lionel Messi of Argentina and Lamine Yamal of Spain.

Therefore, a rescheduling within 2026 seems unlikely. And we’ll have to wait and see whether the teams remain interested in facing each other in 2027.

Why isn’t the Finalissima being played?

Originally, the match between Argentina and Spain was scheduled to take place in Qatar at Lusail Stadium, but well-known conflicts in the region led authorities to decide to change both the venue and the date.

Conmebol revealed that Argentina wanted to change the date for March 31, accepting Italy as the neutral venue, but UEFA considered that date “unworkable.”

With virtually no available dates on the FIFA calendar in 2026, combined with the fact that both UEFA (entity that expressed great disappointment) and Conmebol have been unable to agree on a venue, the match has been delayed so much that its eventual staging remains uncertain.
