Crystal Palace 2-1 Newcastle: Mateta’s late double seals stunning comeback

Crystal Palace claimed a 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Both teams were evenly matched in the opening half hour, with neither keeper called into action until the 35th minute when Aaron Ramsdale produced two sharp saves to deny Yeremy Pino and Daniel Munoz.

Moments later, the hosts could’ve got the opener as Jaydee Canvot met Pino’s corner, but his header flew wide.

Despite the Eagles’ spell of pressure, the visitors struck first in the 43rd minute as William Osula finished off a well-worked move.

Five minutes after the restart, Osula went close to doubling his tally and Newcastle’s lead, but he saw his low effort kept out by Dean Henderson.

Just past the hour mark, Pino could’ve restored parity for the hosts after he met Tyrick Mitchell’s pullback pass, but the Spaniard fired wide.

Moments later, Palace went close to drawing level again as Jefferson Lerma got onto Pino’s free kick, but his header struck the crossbar.

In the 80th minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta finally restored parity for Palace after he headed home Mitchell’s pass.

Deep into stoppage-time, the Eagles were awarded a penalty after Lerma was brought down in the area.

Mateta stepped up for the spot kick and converted to seal the victory for Palace.

The win sees Crystal Palace leapfrog Newcastle United and move up to 13th in the Premier League standings with seven games to go.
