Champions League final: Location, date, why is kick-off at 5pm?

Uefa has brought forward the kick-off time for the Champions League final to 17:00 BST, starting from the 2025-26 season.

This season’s Champions League final will take place on Saturday, 30 May 2026 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

Uefa said the decision to switch from a 20:00 BST kick-off is to “enhance the matchday experience and benefit fans, teams and host cities”.

The new time also provides a more accessible broadcasting window – meaning the final can reach a broader range of audiences.

“With this change, we are placing the fans’ experience at the heart of our planning,” said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

“The new kick-off time will make it even more accessible, inclusive and impactful for everyone involved.”

Uefa added that it wanted to make the experience easier for families and children to attend the event.

It also means that transport should be easier for traveling fans and safer to reach their destinations after the match.

Uefa was criticised by Manchester City fans for its hosting of the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul after supporters were left queuing in the early hours of the morning waiting for transport back to the city and airport.

The organisation also apologised after Liverpool fans were penned in and teargassed before the 2022 final in Paris.
