Newcastle denied historic Barca win by 95th-minute penalty

Newcastle United were denied a famous victory as they drew 1-1 with Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie at St James’ Park tonight.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the decisive second leg at Camp Nou next week.

Newcastle produced an energetic performance in their first-ever knockout match in the Champions League.

The atmosphere inside St James’ Park reflected the significance of the occasion as the hosts looked to test one of Europe’s most decorated clubs.

Eddie Howe’s side started brightly and immediately put Barcelona under pressure with an aggressive press and quick attacking transitions.

Anthony Elanga was particularly lively in the early stages and repeatedly threatened down the right flank, forcing Barcelona’s defence to retreat.

The visitors gradually settled into the contest as Pedri began to dictate possession in midfield and slow the tempo.

Despite their greater control of the ball, Barcelona struggled to create clear opportunities against a disciplined Newcastle defence.

Aaron Ramsdale remained relatively untroubled during a tightly contested first half in which both teams struggled to find a decisive moment.

Newcastle continued to threaten sporadically after the break, relying on quick breaks and the energy of the crowd to push them forward.

The closest chance of the match arrived in the closing stages when Harvey Barnes struck the post after a well-worked attacking move.

Joelinton converted the rebound, but the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving the score level as the tension inside the stadium continued to rise.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 86th minute when Barnes made the most of defensive hesitation to finish first time from Jacob Murphy’s cross.

The goal sparked celebrations among the Newcastle supporters, who sensed their side were closing in on a famous victory.

Barcelona scored a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time. Substitute Dani Olmo was brought down inside the penalty area by Malick Thiaw after clever movement in the box.

The referee immediately awarded a penalty, giving Barcelona a chance to rescue the tie.

Lamine Yamal stepped forward and calmly converted the spot kick, sending Ramsdale the wrong way to level the scoreline.

The second leg in Barcelona promises to be another tense encounter as both teams chase a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
