Liverpool’s £60m summer arrival ruled out for the season as Rennes confirm shoulder operation
Liverpool-bound defender Jeremy Jacquet is set to undergo shoulder surgery after suffering an injury while playing for Stade Rennais F.C..
The 20-year-old was forced off during Rennes’ Ligue 1 fixture against Lens on February 7 after landing awkwardly on his left shoulder.
Following medical examinations, Rennes have confirmed that surgery has been scheduled in the coming days.
The French club issued a brief statement wishing the defender a speedy recovery.
The operation is expected to rule Jacquet out for the remainder of the domestic season.
Liverpool, who agreed a deal for the centre-back in January, remain in close contact with Rennes’ medical staff.
The Premier League champions anticipate that, provided the procedure goes smoothly, Jacquet will be fit in time for the start of pre-season in early July.
Recovery from shoulder surgery of this nature typically takes between eight and 12 weeks, although timelines can vary.
Jacquet is due to complete his move to Anfield on July 1 after Liverpool struck a deal worth £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons.
He has signed a long-term contract until 2031, with the option of a further year.
The France youth international is viewed as part of Liverpool’s long-term defensive planning.
Head coach Arne Slot recently acknowledged the need to prepare for the future.
“We are not stupid,” Slot said last month. “We know that in the upcoming years there will be life at this club without Virgil.”
Jacquet has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in France.
Before his injury, he had started every Ligue 1 match when available this season and made 19 top-flight appearances for his boyhood club.
The timing of the setback offers a degree of reassurance for Liverpool.
With several months before he is required to report for pre-season, there is a clear window for rehabilitation.
Both clubs will hope the surgery resolves the issue fully and allows Jacquet to begin his Liverpool career without further complications.
For now, the focus is on a successful operation and a steady recovery ahead of his summer arrival on Merseyside.
